The H&SS eNews is a monthly electronic publication of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University. Alumni News

--Eileen Heisman (B.A. Psychology, 1976), the president of the National Philanthropic Trust, recently presented at Google's Philanthropy Forum by special request, was the keynote speaker at the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools Conference, and will present at the 20th anniversary Family Firm Institute conference this fall.  Heisman is the president of the National Philanthropic Trust, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary this year, having raised $1 billion in total charitable assets since its inception.

Student News

--Christa R. Romanosky, a senior majoring in psychology and creative writing, was named Carnegie Mellon, Pennsylvania and the Northeast Region Student Employee of the Year and was one of four finalists for the National Student Employee of the Year Award. Romanosky received the awards for her outstanding contributions as an office assistant and tutor in the Leonard Gelfand Center for Service Learning and Outreach under Director Judith Hallinen. She received a $100 U.S. Savings Bond from Carnegie Mellon and a $250 Barnes and Noble gift certificate from the Northeast Region of the American Student Employment Association.

College/Faculty News

--Carnegie Mellon has named G. Richard Tucker, the head of the Department of Modern Languages, a university professor, the highest academic distinction that Carnegie Mellon faculty can achieve. Tucker, the Paul Mellon Professor of Applied Linguistics, is one of the world's leading experts on second-language learning, and has established effective language instruction programs across the globe. He co-authored the seminal monograph "The Bilingual Education of Children” and developed language education programs in the Philippines, Africa and the Middle East. Tucker is the only person to have been honored by all four major North American language education associations: the American Association for Applied Linguistics; the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages; the National Association for Bilingual Education; and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. Other faculty named university professors this year were Jeanne Baxtresser, the Vira I. Heinz Professor of Flute in the School of Music, and Manuel Blum, the Bruce Nelson Professor of Computer Science.

Events

-- Stewart O'Nan, whose award-winning fiction includes "Snow Angels," "The Names of the Dead" and "A Prayer for the Dying," will speak at 8 p.m., Friday, May 5, when the English Department holds it annual Adamson Awards to honor student writers. The event will take place in the Adamson Wing of Baker Hall. O'Nan has also written nonfiction, including "Faithful," an account of the Boston Red Sox's 2004 championship season, which he co-authored with best-selling horror novelist Stephen King. The Adamson Awards honor student writers for their work in fiction, poetry, screen writing and nonfiction. The Adamson Awards are supported by an endowment from the Adamson family established in memory of Pauline Adamson, an alumna of the English Department. --Carnegie Mellon's 109th Commencement will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 21, at Gesling Stadium, rain or shine.
