Applying for Graduate Studies In Philosophy

The deadline for Fall 2008 enrollment is January 15, 2008

Admissions are highly competitive. It is to the applicant's advantage to submit relevant admissions materials as soon as possible as admissions desicions for each school year are made by early March.

The following are due by January 15th of the year you wish to enroll:

  1. A completed copy of the application form. This includes your statement of intent in which you discuss your reasons for pursuing graduate studies, your educational and professional objectives, and any other information that you believe will aid the Graduate Committee in arriving at an admissions decision.

To be mailed to the Graduate Admissions office:

  1. A check for $30 for the application fee made payable to Carnegie Mellon University.
  2. Official transcripts of all college or university work to date.
  3. A piece of original writing on a relevant topic of philosophy, logic, or methodology. This may be replaced by the GRE in mathematics or computer science.

To be mailed to the Department of Philosophy office:

  1. An official copy from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of your scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you are a foreign student, you may request that this requirement be waived (see the appropriate section below). You may send a photocopy of your scores with your application; however, official scores are required.
  2. If English is not your native language, a report of the scores you achieved on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). You may send a photocopy of your scores along with your application; however, official scores are required.
  3. Three letters of recommendation evaluating your potential for graduate study from persons who know you well, including at least two professors.
