Humanities Scholars Program Research
Grants
The Humanities Scholars Program is pleased to announce the establishment of a research fund that is available for scholars in their third year of study. These grants are available due to the generosity of Howard L. Ellin (H&SS '85), a trustee of the university.
Most students in the humanities begin narrowing their academic inquiry during the second half of their undergraduate careers. This involves choosing a major course of study and focusing upon a selected area of intellectual interest.
Preliminary inquiry--which can involve the formulation of a working hypothesis, the immersion into an existing body of scholarly knowledge, or the refinement of an existing talent or technique--can be among the most difficult research to fund, particularly for new scholars without track records of presenting or publishing their work.
The research grants are designed to support this kind of inquiry as well as to introduce the scholars to those tasks--proposal writing, peer review, budget preparation and meeting deadlines--that form the basis of scholarship in the humanities. Additionally, scholars are expected to develop an academic relationship with a faculty member who can act as an academic advisor in consultation with the HSP director.
