Research Interests
Although my research interests are focused on Latin America and more specifically on Social Security Policies in Latin America, my teaching interests cover a wide variety of subjects. My formal training was in Political Science with especial emphasis on Comparative Politics and International Relations. Because of my interest in politics and history I have been teaching a number of courses in which I discuss and analyze political phenomena across boundaries and continents. What unifies these courses is the comparison of political institutions and political behavior in a variety of settings from Western Europe to South Africa, and from the former Soviet Union to Latin America. I am particularly interested in discussing the impact that politics, political leaders and systems have on the society and my Human Rights course is an expression of that interest. I have discovered that films are a very effective tool to teach politics and the impact of politics on the society and my Politics through Film course discusses politics in a variety of settings. The focus in this course is on tyrannical regimes in the 20th century. In the international relations field my interests are the Cold War, United States foreign policy, as well as Globalization and International Relation Theories.

My research interests has two major foci: Social security policies and foreign policy. I have been studying politics and social security policies and politics in South America for the past 20 years. From my standpoint social policies are just an expression of the political system that created the policies and I am interested in looking at the political processes that generates the policies, as well as their impact on the society. My book on Chile discusses Chilean politics and social security policies in the 20th Century. Chile was the first country to fully privatize its social security system and consequently the book contains a thorough analysis of the privatization process. I have also written on politics in other South American countries and on Cuba.

I am currently interested in the process of globalization and its implications on developing countries. My papers on globilization and the poor, dollarization in El Salvador and the evolution of the Polish agricultural sector are a reflection of my concerns with the impact of globalization. I have also developed a course on globalization which I teach both to graduate and undergraduate students.
