STEP 1: COMPLETE APPLICATION FORM. Please type or print in ink.

(Return application to DIRECTOR OF GRADUATE STUDIES, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY, PITTSBURGH, PA 15213.)

STEP 2: Please check to see that you submit the following as part of your application:

  1. Application for Admission form.

  2. Samples of your writing (e.g., research papers, theses, or critical review essays) that reflect the kinds of analytic skills employed in historical research. The Admissions Committee places particular emphasis on these samples as part of your application. If you have questions about which materials to submit please address them to the Director of Graduate Studies.

  3. Professional Statement: On a separate sheet of paper, in a 300- to 750-word essay, address such questions as:
    • Why do you wish to do graduate work in history?
    • What sorts of questions do you imagine addressing as a historian?
    • What attracts you to the Carnegie Mellon graduate history program? Which faculty members do you envision working with?
    • What are your major career goals after completing study at Carnegie Mellon University?

  4. Official transcripts of your college record (undergraduate and any graduate work). If you are still in attendance, the proposed program of the final semester or year should be attached to the application form. If admitted, you will be required to submit an official transcript at the completion of your degree program.

  5. Letters of recommendation from three of your professors or others familiar with your work, including at least one professor from the institution you last attended. (PLEASE ASK YOUR REFEREES TO WRITE DIRECTLY TO THE DIRECTOR OF GRADUATE STUDIES, DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, ON THE FORMS PROVIDED WITH THE APPLICATION.)

  6. Statement of financial need: Applicants who require financial aid should so indicate in a letter accompanying the application. Please state how much of the estimated expenses ($45,998 of which $32,200 is tuition) for the academic year 2008-2009 you can pay out of your own resources. Also indicate how much you can pay for three subsequent years of study.

  7. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the verbal, analytic, and quantitative exams are used as only one of many pieces of data upon which we base our admission decisions. Foreign students who are not native English speakers must take and submit TOEFL scores. Only in exceptional cases will applications be processed without GRE or TOEFL scores. Contact Education Testing Service directly at http://www.ets.org.

  8. Application fee: An application fee of $35 (U.S.) by check or money order (made out to Carnegie Mellon University). Your application will not be complete until your check or money order clears.
