Dr. Marie Norman serves as Adjunct Professor of Anthropology in the Department of History as well as Teaching Consultant and Research Associate at the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Anthropology, where she received a Fulbright fellowship to conduct doctoral research on tourism and caste relations in Nepal. Dr. Norman has taught courses on South Asian history and culture, anthropological theory and practice, medical anthropology, and tourism at Carnegie Mellon and on the University of Pittsburgh’s Semester at Sea program. In her teaching, she encourages students to apply anthropological perspectives and approaches to issues and controversies in their own culture(s). Dr. Norman’s current research interests involve using anthropological theories and methods to explore practical problems. She has conducted research for St. Margaret’s Hospital, Allegheny College, and the Eberly Center, and has served as an ethnographic consultant for Fathom Design. She is currently involved in research on issues affecting adjunct faculty, as well as a longitudinal study of student experience at Carnegie Mellon.
