Joe William Trotter, Jr. is the Giant Eagle Professor of History and Social Justice and Department Head. He also directs Carnegie Mellon's Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy. Professor Trotter received his BA degree from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. In addition to the edited collection of essays, The Great Migration in Historical Perspective: New Dimensions of Race, Class, and Gender (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1991), his publications include Coal, Class, and Color: Blacks in Southern West Virginia, 1915-32 (Urbana: University of Illinois,1990); Black Milwaukee: The Making of an Industrial Proletariat, 1915-45 (Urbana: University of Illinois, 1985); River Jordan: African American Urban Life in the Ohio Valley (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 1998); and the college level textbook, The African American Experience (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2001). His most recent book (with Tera Hunter and Earl Lewis) is an edited volume, The African American Urban Experience: Perspectives from the Colonial Period to the Present (Palgrave Publishing Company, 2004).
