Joyce Baskins,
Youth Coordinator
Joyce Baskins is a grandmother
of four children and is the Youth Coordinator of Pittsburgh's Community Literacy
Center. Joyce, along with Linda Flower and Wayne Peck organized the Community
Literacy Center in 1987. Joyce comes from a prophetic family of social activists
on the Northside of Pittsburgh and can trace her family through ten generations
of community activists in the Pittsburgh area.
Joyce has been appointed by the Mayor of Pittsburgh to the Regional Assets Board, a small and powerful Board which makes critical funding decisions concerning cultural initiatives in Western Pennsylvania. She is currently conducting grassroots research on problems and possibilities for African American teenagers within families and other institutions, like schools and hospitals. Joyce has a special sensitivity for issues of love and justice.
