How to Add H&SS Printers in Mac OSX (Panther)

This is the supported method for connecting to H&SS printers in OS X (Panther). Printing via AppleTalk is not supported due to campus-wide phase-out of the technology across subnets (e.g. building-to-building).

Useful information to have ready before you begin is the name of the desired printer and its type: usually, these can be found on the printer itself (for example: TESLA, HP LaserJet 8100 Series PS).

1. From the Finder program, click the "File" menu and select "Find..." In the search window, search for items whose name contains "Print Center"

2. "Print Center" should come up as one of the search results. Double-click it to open the application.

Useful Hint: Dragging the “Print Center” application icon to the dock creates a permanent shortcut to Print Center that is easily accessible.

3. From the Printer List box, click the "Add" icon.

4. Choose "IP Printing" in the first box of the new window (it may be the default). Then configure as follows:

Printer Type: LPD/LPR

Printer Address: hsscomp.hss.cmu.edu

UNCHECK the box labeled "Use Default Queue on Server" if it exists

Queue Name: [Type the printer NAME; using CAPS is preferable]

Printer Model: [select the TYPE and Model Name of printer from these dropdown menus]

Click the “Add” button at the bottom of the window.

5. The printer should now appear in the printer list. You may add other printers using this method, and select a default printer from your list.
