Additional CAUSE Projects

"Stacks of Obits: Affective Responses to Murder in Los Angeles"
by Stephanie Batiste, English Department, Carnegie Mellon University

This project is a dramatic presentation of the personal experiences of Professor Batiste and her sister within the context of what she describes as "a crucible of violence and mass emotional victimization" in contemporary Los Angeles, California. The performance itself is based primarily on her sister's scrapbook of recorded experiences, which she commenced recording in 1992 at age 15.

"Stacks of Obits" was performed at the Annual Meeting of the American Studies Association in Hartford, Connecticut, 2003. Support from CAUSE allowed Stephanie to complete research in Los Angeles, California, for her project. Stephanie is now developing a relationship with the theater initiatives for youth in Pittsburgh possibly to adapt the performance to another local context.
