Ethnography & Arts Policy

The Center has added an ethnographic inquiry to the survey methods developed for the Arts and Culture Observatory, a project of the Arts Management Program at the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon. The purpose of an ethnographic inquiry is to elicit native interpretations of art and culture, to trace the sources of people's perspectives on an art or cultural event, and to reconsider the definitions of "art" and or "culture" so they incorporate popular understandings. In giving voice to the individuals who are the targets of an institution's policies and practices, an ethnographic method adds a crucial dimension to the findings from survey, polling, and quantitative methods.
