New Course - Spring 2008

The Art of Gentrification
Matthew Reynolds, Ph.D.

This interdisciplinary, upper-level seminar will examine the role of the visual arts in the redevelopment of urban space. Urban redevelopment, or ³revitalization,² is nearly always predicated on the use of art as a way of attracting new communities to run-down neighborhoods. This class will examine specific case studies including Times Square, Hollywood, downtown Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. It will undertake an analysis of public art projects, architecture and design, film, media and literature to ask a series of questions: Who ultimately benefits from this social dynamic and who is left out? How do issues of race, class and gender facilitate and/or forestall the process of urban renewal? And how can individual artists and their work contribute to the exploration of space as a site of history and struggle?
