CENTER FOR THE ARTS IN SOCIETY–ARTS IN SOCIETY MINOR

Arts in Society Minor Course Selection - Spring 2008

Center for the Arts in Society–Arts in Society Minor
The Arts in Society Minor (AIS) offers students the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research and practice across traditional institutional boundaries at the University. Combining the resources of the five schools within the College of Fine Arts and the four humanities departments within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, it aims to train students in combining thinking across disciplines and using both the humanities and the fine arts as a means of creation and interpretation. For information about signing up for the minor, contact Krista Campbell at kcampbell@cmu.edu or 412-268-5279.

The AIS Minor requires a minimum of six courses from the general themes outlined below.

I. PERSPECTIVES     (18 units minimum)
These courses offer students two different approaches to understanding the role of the arts in society. The first perspective is historical; these courses offer a survey of an art or arts over time in diverse social contexts. The second approach is contextual; these courses offer students an approach to the functions the arts may play in varying social contexts—as renewal, for example, or as a form of protest.

II. PROJECT COURSES        (18 units minimum)
These courses offer an opportunity to put what they have learned into practice in two ways. Studio/Research courses provide the students with research experience that will culminate either in a substantial written work or an artistic product. Practice courses allow the student to apply knowledge/experience in a project that explores the social contexts of the arts. Choice of particular courses should be made in consultation with the AIS advisor.

III. INDEPENDENT STUDY/CAPSTONE            (12 units minimum)
This is where a student brings it all together. The student develops an independent project and produces an installation, paper, composition or other major work that reflects his or her understanding of the role of the arts in society. The topic for an independent study should be done in consultation with the AIS advisor.

Other courses may be considered in consultation with the Arts in Society advisor.
Please note, some courses may be for majors only or require prerequisites, and students may be waitlisted or need instructor permission.
