________

The Center for the Arts in Society brings artists and humanists together to inquire into the role of the arts in societies. Through practice, publications, exhibitions, performances, and projects, artists and humanists examine the impact of the arts on social change as well as the importance of historical events for the evolution of the arts. In courses, in programs for visiting scholars, and in sponsored research activities, the Center fosters interdisciplinary collaboration both within the University and between the University and arts and cultural organizations.

Founded in spring 2000 with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Center for the Arts in Society bridges two Carnegie Mellon Colleges: the College of Fine Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Its three main agendas are: curricular innovation; events and visiting scholars to reflect new inquiries into the role of the arts in societies; support of interdisciplinary research and practice among faculty, students, and the non-academic community.

The Center has a minor, Arts in Society, and is currently engaged in creating an Arts-Histories curriculum for the University.

Members of the Center must serve on a Center committee and teach interdisciplinary courses that contribute to the curriculum. The Center supports faculty research and projects with small grants and facilitates publication, exhibits, and performances.
