JobsNow it is time to put all your hard work to task. It is our hope that you have completed the previous steps of getting to know yourself in terms of your skills, interests and abilities. Also, you have learned about the types of organizations you want to target as well as geographic location. The first step in the actual job search is to hone your resume. Then, begin utilizing all the resources available to source potential employers. This includes TartanTRAK, CareerSearch, The Vault, H1BVisa.org, this page, your personal network, professional organizations, alumni, and the Internet. The next step is to write a solid cover letter that highlights your skills as they pertain to the needs of the position and company (see our job search correspondence pages for help). As you begin applying to open positions, it is advisable to create a system, either electronically or paper based of your application materials (resume and cover letter), subsequent correspondence with the organization, offers or rejections and finally, your acceptance of a position. Sound like a lot? Come see us--we're here to help. We can assist with developing your job search tools, sourcing open positions, interviewing skills including etiquette, professional dress, and negotiating offers. Lastly, please report your new position to the Career Center. It is very beneficial to fellow students and alumni to see where peers gain employment. We are sure that at one or more times during your tenure at Carnegie Mellon, you have wondered what students do with your type of degree. Then, celebrate your success! |
