H&SS Honors Thesis Submission Requirements

NOTE: These requirements differ slightly for students completing theses who are enrolled at the university's Qatar campus. Those differences are noted below.

In order to successfully complete your Honors project and qualify to graduate with H&SS College Honors you must do the following:

1. Thesis Submission: submit all required elements of your project to Program Director Jay Devine in Baker Hall A57 by no later than Friday, November 30th (deadline for Fall 2007 completion) or Friday, April 25th (deadline for Spring 2008 completion). The required elements are as follows; see below for details:

  • hard copy of your thesis
  • completed signature page
  • electronic copy of your thesis
  • signed publishing agreement

Please submit all four of these elements together in a large envelope labeled with your name.

Thesis Submission (modified for Qatar students):
  • hard copy: submission of a hard copy of your thesis is OPTIONAL
  • signature page: you may submit the signature page electronically (as a PDF emailed to tango@andrew.cmu.edu), via fax (412-268-1293) or in hard copy form. Keep in mind that, as outlined below, you must submit it to us complete with advisor and approving department head signatures: if either/both of those people are on the Pittsburgh campus, then you will need to discuss with your advisor how best to route the signature page in order to have it arrive at our office by the deadline with all necessary signatures
  • electronic copy of thesis: please follow the stated format guidelines for electronic copies and submit to tango@andrew.cmu.edu
  • signed publishing agreement: as with the signature page, your signed publishing agreement may be submitted electronically (as a PDF emailed to tango@andrew.cmu.edu), via fax (412-268-1293) or in hard copy form
  • re submitting thesis components via email to Vanessa Calvin (tango@andrew.cmu.edu): it is strongly preferred that you zip all necessary documents together and then attach the zip file to your message. If at all possible, one zip file, one email message (versus multiple emails with various attachments). If you have web space available, you may instead upload your zip file somewhere and then send email with an appropriate download link.

2. Thesis Presentation: present your thesis by participating in the university's Undergraduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, May 7, 2008. If you are unable to fulfill the presentation requirement via the symposium, you must contact Program Director Joseph Devine to arrange to fulfill it in an alternate way (this exception is primarily directed to students completing their theses sometime other than the Spring semester). Registration is online: visit the URO's website and click on "Undergraduate Research Symposium" for more details.

Thesis Presentation (modified for Qatar students):
We assume that a presentation at the symposium in May is not possible for you. As such, you will need to fulfill the presentation requirement by doing your own presentation in Doha, at a time and place to be agreed upon by you and your thesis advisor. Your advisor's signature on your thesis signature page will be viewed as confirmation that such an arrangement has been made.

More information on required elements:

The hard copy of your thesis should be unbound. Our office does not require a particular manuscript style. Your thesis advisor and/or department may have style/format requirements, however.

The signature page is a cover sheet for your thesis which certifies that it has been approved by your advisor, department head and dean. Signature pages are typically created on official departmental letterhead. Our sample signature page illustrates the appropriate format and content. You must secure the advisor and department head signatures before submitting your thesis to our office; however, we will obtain H&SS Dean John Lehoczky's signature for you, so you need not route your thesis to him for approval.

The electronic copy of your thesis should conform to our format guidelines. We are building an electronic collection of theses in collaboration with University Libraries -- thus the need for format specifications.

The publishing agreement will allow your thesis to be part of the aforementioned electronic collection that is in development. Our collection of hard copies is no longer manageable, nor is it easily accessible. Our hope for an electronically accessible library of theses is to create a "living" and useful body of work. Please print the agreement, review it, and then complete your portion.
